The object of this fifth edition of the book “Law of Torts, Compensation Under Other Statutory Laws and Consumer Protection Law” by Dr. N.V. Paranjape, is to provide primary resource material on Law of Torts to the students taking professional courses in law and appraise the legal fraternity of the developments that are taking place in this branch of law in the new millennium.

The law of torts is based almost entirely on case law. The book, therefore, covers all those cases which have substantially contributed to the development of this branch of law. The book comprises four Parts, i.e., Part I embodies the general principles whereas Part II is devoted to specific torts. As a matter of fact, the doctrine of contributory negligence being one of the fundamental principles governing assessment of damages for the tort of negligence, it ought to have been placed in Part I, but in order to maintain relativity and consistence, it has been incorporated and discussed in chapter on negligence as a tort in Part II of the book. Part III of the Book deals with some other compensatory reliefs available under Specific Laws, which were earlier available only under the law of torts and Part IV contains section-wise commentary on the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

The tort-litigation in India has gained sufficient momentum in the new millennium with tremendous developments in trade, commerce and industries which have brought about a radical change in the living pattern of Indian society. The author has endeavoured to take note of these developing trends and their impact on law of torts. An attempt has been made to deal with the related topics with greater thrust on Indian perspective citing relevant judicial pronouncements wherever necessary.

The author has drawn extensively from the works of Sir Salmond, Dr. Winfield, Federick Pollock, Fleming, Ramaswamy lyer, Ratan Lal Dhiraj Lal and others. The authorities, both Indian and foreign, that have been relied upon and used as source material have been duly referred to and acknowledged in the foot-notes.

A select bibliography, list of abbreviations, table of cases and an exhaustive Index at the end of the book would be found more useful by the inquisitive readers.
