Legal education has assumed an extremely important role in modern society as it covers almost all facets of human life. The importance of legal education and research becomes all the more eminent when the lawyers and legal fraternity look for a new law where they find that the existing law does not serve the purpose or creates problems in smooth functioning of the society. The main objective of legal education and research should therefore, be to find out whether law is in fact serving the needs of the society and, if not, why and where it is faulting. Obviously, in order to achieve this objective, legal education and research has to adapt itself to the changing needs of the society.
\nUndoubtedly, there has been a phenomenal growth of legal education over the years and the focus of change throughout has been to make it socially relevant and professionally meaningful, but the structural reforms carried out in the direction have not yielded the desired results despite tremendous increase in the number of law Colleges, Schools or University Law Departments during the past fifty years. However, the National Law School University (NLSUI) system initiated by Dr. N.R. Madhava Menon in early nineties and its successful functioning for the preceding two decades has shown a path towards progressive transformation in the model of legal education which needs to be extended to all the colleges and institutions imparting legal education in a phased manner so as to ensure implementation of a uniform pattern of legal education throughout the country.
\nLegal research, being an inseparable component of legal education, has also assumed considerable importance with the changing role of law in social dynamics. It therefore, becomes necessary for those who are pursuing higher legal studies, to be thoroughly conversant with the research methodology and tools and techniques thereof, so as to develop a scientific temper to proceed with the research studies. The researchers have also to acquaint themselves with the empirical approach to legal and socio-legal research by collaborating with other social science disciplines adopting interdisciplinary method for probing into the problems relating to functioning of law in the society.
